Best CPU for RTX 4070
For most builds, the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X or Intel Core i5-13600K is the best overall pairing for an RTX 4070. Either one has enough single-core speed to keep the GPU fully loaded at 1440p without bottlenecking it, and you don't pay for cores the RTX 4070 can't use in most games.
The RTX 4070 also needs less CPU than most people expect. In our calculator, a Ryzen 5 5600X already pairs with it at a perfect 0% bottleneck, and the Core i5-12400F and i5-13400F are within about 2%. Step up to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D only if you play esports at 240Hz or plan to move to a faster GPU later. With the RTX 4070 alone, much of its extra speed goes unused.
The right pick still depends on resolution, refresh-rate target, and whether you're building fresh or putting a new CPU into an existing board. The sections below cover each case.
Quick Answer / Key Takeaways
These are the CPUs worth considering for an RTX 4070, sorted by who each one suits. The 1440p column comes from our calculator.
| CPU | Best For | 1440p Result With RTX 4070 | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMD Ryzen 5 5600 / 5600X | Tightest budget builds, DDR4 AM4 platforms | 0–1.7%, balanced | Excellent |
| Intel Core i5-12400F / 13400F | Budget Intel build, existing B660/B760 board | 1.2–2.3%, GPU-limited | Excellent |
| AMD Ryzen 5 7600X | Best overall pairing for a new build | 6.4%, GPU-limited | Excellent |
| Intel Core i5-13600K / 14600K | Mid-range Intel build, mixed gaming and productivity | 7.0–7.5%, GPU-limited | Very good |
| AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D | High-refresh 1080p, future GPU upgrades | 12.2%, GPU-limited | Good |
"GPU-limited" means the RTX 4070 is the slower part, so the CPU has spare capacity. That's why a higher number in this column isn't a bad result: it's headroom you're paying for but not using yet.

| AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | 17.4% | 12.6% | 7.5% | CPU |
The balance point sits at the Ryzen 5 5600X. Every chip above it has power left over once the RTX 4070 is fully loaded. The 5600, i5-11400F and i5-12400F class sit within about 2% either side, which you won't notice in games. Real slowdowns start with Zen 2, Intel 10th gen and the quad-core i3s, at around 6–7% at 1440p and nearly 10% at 1080p.
At default settings, the calculator estimates about 135 FPS at 1080p, 87 FPS at 1440p and 52 FPS at 4K for the RTX 4070. These are model estimates, not benchmark runs. Our page on how accurate bottleneck calculators are explains what they leave out.
Best CPUs for RTX 4070
The RTX 4070 sits in the upper-mid tier. It's fast enough at 1440p that a genuinely weak CPU can hold it back, but it doesn't need a flagship chip to stay fed. Here's how the main candidates compare.
AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
The default recommendation for a new build. It has six modern cores and strong single-thread performance. The price leaves room in the budget for RAM or storage instead of CPU headroom the RTX 4070 won't use. Paired with DDR5-6000, it stays ahead of the GPU at 1080p, 1440p and 4K. It also sits on AM5, which AMD supports through at least 2027, so a faster chip can drop into the same board later.
Intel Core i5-13600K / Core i5-14600K
The Intel equivalent, and close enough in gaming performance that the choice usually comes down to platform preference or an existing motherboard. Both have more cores than the 7600X, which helps a little in CPU-heavy open-world games and multitasking. The cost is higher power draw and a bigger cooler. They also work on DDR4 boards, which can lower the cost of a build. Before installing either one, update the motherboard BIOS: Intel fixed an instability problem in 13th- and 14th-gen desktop chips through microcode updates.
AMD Ryzen 5 5600 / 5600X
The budget pick, and a legitimate one. In our calculator, the 5600X matches the RTX 4070 exactly, and the 5600 is within 2%. On an existing DDR4 AM4 board or a fresh budget build, either one keeps the card fed at 1440p in nearly all games. The gap shows up in CPU-bound esports titles pushed to very high frame rates at 1080p. If that's your target, look higher.
Intel Core i5-12400F / i5-13400F
The Intel-side budget pair. Both land on the GPU-limited side of the balance point in our calculator, at 1.2–2.3% at 1440p, so the RTX 4070 still sets the frame rate. Platform cost (motherboard and RAM) usually decides between these and the Ryzen 5 5600 rather than performance.
AMD Ryzen 7 7700X / Ryzen 7 9700X
Eight cores instead of six, for anyone who streams, records gameplay or runs heavy background apps while gaming. For gaming alone they add little over the 7600X with this card. The 9700X is the cooler-running, 65W option of the two.
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
The highest gaming score of any CPU commonly paired with this GPU tier, thanks to 3D V-Cache. With the RTX 4070 alone, our calculator shows 12% of its capacity going unused at 1440p, so it's overkill for that resolution. It's the right choice if you're upgrading the GPU within a year or two, or targeting high-refresh 1080p in CPU-heavy games, where the cache actually shows up.
Best Budget CPU for RTX 4070
If the goal is the cheapest CPU that won't waste the GPU, choose the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 on AM4 or the Intel Core i5-12400F on LGA1700. Both keep the RTX 4070 as the limiting part, or within 2% of it, at 1440p, where this GPU is meant to run. On a budget AM5 build, the Ryzen 5 7600 does the same at 1.7% GPU-limited and leaves an upgrade path open.
Best CPU for RTX 4070 at 1080p
At 1080p the CPU does more of the work, because the GPU finishes each frame faster and waits more often. This is where the Ryzen 7 7800X3D earns its keep if you're targeting 165Hz or more in competitive games. For 1080p at 60–144Hz in typical single-player games, the Ryzen 5 7600X or Core i5-13600K is still plenty. The extra headroom of an X3D chip mostly matters once frame-rate targets get aggressive.
Best CPU for RTX 4070 at 1440p
1440p is the RTX 4070's home resolution, and it moves the load back toward the GPU. Any of the mid-tier picks above (7600X, 13600K or 14600K) pairs cleanly here, and the CPU is rarely the limiting part. This is also where the budget picks (5600, 12400F) hold up best, since the GPU is doing more of the work. Our guide to how resolution changes your bottleneck explains why.
Upgrading an Older PC to an RTX 4070
The RTX 4070 is a popular upgrade for older systems, and how well it fits depends on the CPU you already have:
- Ryzen 5 3600 or Ryzen 7 3700X: 6–7% CPU-limited at 1440p and 8–10% at 1080p. On the same AM4 board, a Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5700X3D removes that gap after a BIOS update.
- Core i5-10400F or i7-8700K: about 7% at 1440p. Usable, but a newer platform will get more from the card at 1080p.
- Core i7-7700K or Ryzen 5 2600: 10–13% at 1440p and 13–17% at 1080p. Plan a CPU upgrade with the GPU.
Our guide to fixing a bottleneck in your PC covers the settings changes that help in the meantime.
RTX 4070 vs 4070 SUPER vs 4070 Ti: Does the CPU Change?
Only at the budget end. Each step up the RTX 4070 family is a little faster, so a budget CPU moves from balanced to slightly CPU-limited:
| GPU | Ryzen 5 5600 (1440p) | Ryzen 5 7600X (1440p) |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 4070 | 1.7% CPU-limited | 6.4% GPU-limited |
| RTX 4070 SUPER | 3.4% CPU-limited | 4.1% GPU-limited |
| RTX 4070 Ti | 4.6% CPU-limited | 2.3% GPU-limited |
| RTX 4070 Ti SUPER | 5.5% CPU-limited | 1.2% GPU-limited |
With an RTX 4070 SUPER or either Ti model, a Ryzen 5 7600X, Core i5-13600K or better is the better match. With the base RTX 4070, the Ryzen 5 5600 class is still fine.
Does the RTX 4070 Need a High-End CPU?
No. The RTX 4070 scores 78 out of 100 for gaming in our GPU database, so a flagship CPU spends most of its time waiting on the GPU, not the other way around. A Ryzen 9 7950X3D, Ryzen 9 7900X3D or Core i9 paired with this card adds nothing to frame rates. For gaming, money spent moving from a Ryzen 5 7600X to a Ryzen 9 is largely wasted. It would do more for your frame rates as a better monitor, or saved toward the next GPU. Buy those chips only if you also need their cores for rendering or video work.
Platform, Power and Cooling
- Power supply: NVIDIA lists 650W as the minimum system power for the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 SUPER. Any of the CPUs on this page fit comfortably within a quality 650W unit, and 750W leaves room for a high-draw i5-14600K. See our PSU bottleneck guide.
- Cooling: 65W chips such as the Ryzen 5 7600, 9600X and 9700X run on a modest tower cooler. The i5-13600K and 14600K can draw up to 181W, so give them a stronger air cooler or a 240mm liquid cooler.
- Platform: AM5 has an upgrade path ahead. LGA1700 ended with 14th gen, so an Intel build there is final. AM4 is the cheapest route for an upgrade, with drop-in chips up to the 5800X3D.
- Memory: DDR5-6000 suits Ryzen 7000 and 9000 chips. Slow or single-channel RAM can make a good CPU look like a bottleneck. Our RAM bottleneck guide has the details.
Frequently Asked Questions
What CPU won't bottleneck an RTX 4070?
Any CPU from the Ryzen 5 5600X, Core i5-12400F or newer. In our calculator they all sit at the balance point or on the GPU-limited side, so the RTX 4070 sets your frame rate.
What is the cheapest CPU that won't bottleneck an RTX 4070?
The Ryzen 5 5600 and Core i5-12400F. Both are within 2.3% of perfect balance at 1440p in our calculator.
Is the Ryzen 5 5600 good enough for an RTX 4070?
Yes. It's 1.7% CPU-limited at 1440p and 2.3% at 1080p in our calculator, which you won't notice outside very high-refresh esports.
Is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D overkill for an RTX 4070?
For the RTX 4070 alone at 1440p or 4K, yes: about 12–16% of its capacity goes unused. It makes sense for 240Hz esports or a planned GPU upgrade.
Does an RTX 4070 need a Core i7 or i9?
No. An i5-12400F already keeps it fully loaded. A Core i7 or i9 only helps if you also need the extra cores for work.
