Best GPU for i5-13600K

For most i5-13600K builds, the best GPU is an RTX 4070 SUPER or Radeon RX 9070 at 1440p, or an RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT if you want more headroom. The RTX 4080 SUPER and RX 7900 XTX are the most this CPU can use before it starts holding the card back. On a budget, a 16GB RTX 5060 Ti, RX 9060 XT or Arc B580 covers 1080p gaming well.

The Core i5-13600K came out in late 2022, and many people who own one are now looking for a GPU upgrade rather than a new build. That makes the GPU the key decision. LGA1700 has no CPU generations left after 14th gen, so the graphics card is the main way to get more performance from this platform. This guide uses our bottleneck calculator to show how much GPU the 13600K can actually use.

Quick Picks for the i5-13600K

  • Best for 1440p: RTX 4070 SUPER, RTX 5070 or RX 9070, at 1.7–4.6% GPU-limited at 1440p in our calculator, with the 13600K keeping up easily.
  • Best high-end match: RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT, at 0.6–1.2% at 1440p. That's nearly a perfect balance.
  • The ceiling: RTX 4080 SUPER or RX 7900 XTX. Both are under 1% at 1440p, with the CPU just becoming the limiting part.
  • Best budget: RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, RX 9060 XT 16GB or Arc B580 for 1080p high refresh.

Upgrading the GPU in an Existing i5-13600K PC

Many 13600K systems were built with an RTX 3060, RTX 3070 or RTX 4060. In our calculator, each of those leaves the CPU with plenty of unused capacity, sitting between 12% and 19% GPU-limited at 1440p. In other words, the CPU isn't what's holding the frame rate down. Here's what a GPU upgrade changes:

Current GPUIts 1440p ResultSuggested UpgradeUpgrade's 1440p Result
RTX 3060 (12GB)18.6% GPU-limitedRTX 4070 SUPER or RX 90704.6% / 1.7% GPU-limited
RTX 4060 (8GB)17.4% GPU-limitedRTX 4070 SUPER or RX 90704.6% / 1.7% GPU-limited
RTX 3070 (8GB)12.2% GPU-limitedRTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT1.2% / 0.6% GPU-limited
RTX 3080 (10GB)6.4% GPU-limitedRTX 4080 SUPER or RX 7900 XTXBalanced, under 1%

At default settings, the calculator puts average 1440p frame rates at about 65 FPS for the RTX 3060 and 92 FPS for the RTX 4070 SUPER with this CPU. That jump comes entirely from the GPU. Coming from an 8GB card, the upgrade also fixes the texture and stutter problems newer games can cause when video memory runs out. Our VRAM bottleneck guide explains those symptoms.

Before you upgrade, check two things: the power supply (covered below) and that the motherboard BIOS has Intel's latest microcode. Intel 13th- and 14th-gen desktop chips, the i5-13600K included, were affected by an instability problem that Intel fixed through BIOS updates. Install the update before you change any other parts.

23 Graphics Cards Paired With the i5-13600K

These results come from our calculator's engine at default gaming settings. "GPU" as the limiting part means the card is the slower side and the 13600K has spare capacity. "CPU" means the card is faster than the 13600K can fully feed.

The crossover sits at the RTX 4080 SUPER and RX 7900 XTX. Below them, every card is the limit. Above them, the 13600K starts to cap performance, mostly at 1080p and 1440p. These are model estimates, not benchmarks. Our page on bottleneck calculator accuracy explains what that means for real games.

How Far Can You Push an i5-13600K?

Further than most people expect. The 13600K has six performance cores and eight efficiency cores (14 cores, 20 threads), and its strong single-core speed is what games depend on most. Even with an RTX 4090, our calculator shows only 3.8% at 1440p and 2.3% at 4K.

Whether that's worth it depends on the resolution. At 4K, an RTX 5080 or RTX 4090 with a 13600K is a reasonable build, because the GPU sets the frame rate nearly all the time. At 1080p with a 240Hz monitor, or in CPU-heavy games like strategy titles, MMOs and simulators, a top-tier card will often sit partly idle. Since this platform can't take a faster CPU beyond the i5-14600K, i7-14700K or i9-14900K, a very expensive card is also a commitment to the board's limits. For comparison, our best CPU for RTX 4090 guide covers the CPUs that keep that card fully loaded.

At higher resolutions the GPU carries more of the load, which is why the 4K row can use the strongest cards without the 13600K getting in the way. Our guide to how resolution changes your bottleneck walks through why.

Intel Platform Details That Affect Your GPU Choice

  • Power supply: the i5-13600K can draw up to 181W under heavy load, more than its 125W base rating suggests. Add that to the GPU's needs. NVIDIA lists 650W for the RTX 4070 SUPER, 750W for the RTX 5070 Ti and 4080 SUPER, and 850W for the RTX 5080 and RTX 4090. If your current unit is older or near the limit, see our PSU bottleneck guide.
  • DDR4 or DDR5 board: the 13600K supports both, depending on the motherboard. A DDR4 board costs a few percent in CPU-heavy games, but it doesn't change which GPU to buy. Our RAM bottleneck guide covers memory speed.
  • PCIe slot: Z690 and Z790 boards usually wire the main slot for PCIe 5.0, while many B660 and B760 boards use PCIe 4.0. Every current graphics card runs at full or near-full speed on PCIe 4.0 x16.
  • Resizable BAR: 600- and 700-series boards support it. Turn it on in the BIOS. It's required for Intel Arc cards and helps many others.
  • Quick Sync: the 13600K's built-in UHD 770 graphics include Intel's Quick Sync video engine, which speeds up video editing in many apps even with an AMD or NVIDIA card installed. The 13600KF doesn't have integrated graphics, so it has no Quick Sync.

Does the Advice Change for the i5-13600KF or i5-14600K?

No. The i5-13600KF is the same processor with the integrated graphics disabled, so gaming performance and GPU pairings are identical. You lose Quick Sync and the backup display output. The i5-14600K is a slightly faster refresh on the same socket. In our calculator it moves the balance point a little higher: the RTX 4080 SUPER drops to 0.4% at 1440p. Every pick in this guide applies to all three chips.

NVIDIA, AMD or Intel Arc With an Intel CPU?

There's no performance benefit to matching brands. An Intel CPU works just as well with a Radeon card as with GeForce. Choose based on features:

  • NVIDIA: DLSS, stronger ray tracing, and the NVENC encoder for streaming.
  • AMD: more video memory for the money and strong performance without ray tracing.
  • Intel Arc: the best memory-per-dollar at the budget end, as long as Resizable BAR is on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an i5-13600K bottleneck an RTX 4080?

No. With the original RTX 4080, our calculator shows the GPU as the limit at every resolution, at only 0.4–0.8%. With the RTX 4080 SUPER, the CPU becomes the limit by under 1.5%, which you won't notice.

Will an i5-13600K bottleneck an RTX 4090?

A little: 5.2% at 1080p, 3.8% at 1440p and 2.3% at 4K in our calculator. It's fine for 4K. For high-refresh 1080p, a faster CPU gets more out of the card.

Is the RTX 4070 SUPER a good match for the i5-13600K?

Yes. It's one of the best value pairings for 1440p. The card stays the limiting part at 4.6% at 1440p, so the CPU never holds it back.

Does the i5-13600K have integrated graphics?

Yes, Intel UHD Graphics 770. It's enough for a display, troubleshooting and Quick Sync video encoding, but not for modern gaming. The 13600KF has no integrated graphics.

What is the best budget GPU for an i5-13600K?

The 16GB RTX 5060 Ti, the 16GB RX 9060 XT or the 12GB Arc B580. All three handle 1080p high refresh, and the 13600K has plenty in reserve for a bigger card later.
