Best AM4 CPU for Gaming in 2026

Best AM4 CPU for Gaming in 2026

Quick answer: Keep the AM4 board. If the graphics card is an RTX 4060 or RTX 4070, a Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X is enough: our calculator estimates the same frame rate for those cards with a 5800X3D. Buy the Ryzen 7 5800X3D when you want the highest AM4 gaming score and headroom for a faster card. Buy a Ryzen 9 5900X or 5950X when the PC also does heavy rendering. Replace a Ryzen 7 2700X once the card is an RTX 4070 or faster. A Ryzen 5 3600 still keeps up with a 4070, and falls behind on an RTX 4080 or 4090.

Every figure below comes from the same engine as the bottleneck calculator, on desktop chips whose socket is AM4. The run is gaming at 1440p, 144 Hz, 16 GB of DDR4-3200 in dual channel, an NVMe drive, ray tracing off, and upscaling off. These are model estimates, not a timed game benchmark. What that leaves out is covered in how accurate a bottleneck calculator is.

A GPU result means the graphics card is the limit, so a higher percentage is spare CPU, not a problem to fix. A CPU result means the processor is the limit. On this site, under 10% is a pair to leave alone, 10–20% is a small gap, and above 20% is the band where an upgrade is worth planning.

The OEM Ryzen 9 5900 and Ryzen 7 5800 sit next to the X parts in the same list, at gaming scores 89 and 79. They are not the retail chips in the picks above.

The frame-rate estimate barely moves inside this table: At 1440p it is about 67 FPS on the RTX 4060, 87 on the RTX 4070, and 99 on the RTX 4080, for every chip from the 5600 through the 5800X3D. The percentage is headroom. It tells you which part would run out first if you changed the card or the resolution. It does not, by itself, mean the 5800X3D draws more frames than a 5600X on a 4070.

Best Overall: Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Ryzen 7 5700X3D

The 5800X3D is the top of the socket in our gaming scores: It is an 8-core, 16-thread chip with a gaming score of 93, a rendering score of 58, and 96 MB of L3 cache in our hardware list. Its TDP entry is 105W. With an RTX 4080 at 1440p it is 2.3% GPU-limited. With an RTX 4090 it is 2.5% CPU-limited at 1440p, 3.5% at 1080p, and 1.5% at 4K. All three sit under 10%.

The 5700X3D is the next 8-core chip with stacked cache in the list, at a gaming score of 85. With the RTX 4080 at 1440p it is 1.7% CPU-limited, and the FPS estimate is the same 99. With an RTX 4090 at 1440p it is 5.9% CPU-limited and still estimates 111 FPS, the same estimate as the 5800X3D. Pick the 5800X3D when you can. Pick the 5700X3D when you cannot. Neither one raises the 4060 or 4070 estimate above the 5600X.

Best Budget: Ryzen 5 5600 and Ryzen 5 5600X

The 5600 is the budget chip that still clears a 4070: Six cores, 12 threads, a gaming score of 74, 32 MB of L3, and a 65W TDP entry. At 1440p it is 8.1% GPU-limited with an RTX 4060 and 1.7% CPU-limited with an RTX 4070. With an RTX 4080 it is 6.3% CPU-limited, still under 10%, at the same 99 FPS estimate as the 5800X3D.

The 5600X is the balance point on an RTX 4070: 0% at 1440p, gaming score 78, also 32 MB of L3 and 65W in our list. The step up from the 5600 is one point of percentage on that card, not a new frame-rate bracket. The RTX 4060 CPU guide and the RTX 4070 CPU guide cover the same two chips from the graphics-card side.

The Ryzen 5 5500 is not the budget upgrade. Its gaming score is 46, below a Ryzen 5 3600 at 61. With an RTX 4070 at 1440p it is 13.4% CPU-limited and estimates 69 FPS, under the 87 FPS of a 5600.

Best for Gaming and Work: Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 9 5950X

More cores, a lower gaming score than the 5800X3D: The 5900X is 12 cores and 24 threads, gaming score 90, rendering score 79. The 5950X is 16 cores and 32 threads, gaming score 86, rendering score 81, with a 105W TDP entry. At 1440p the 5900X is 7% GPU-limited on an RTX 4070 and 0.6% GPU-limited on an RTX 4080. The 5950X is 1.3% CPU-limited on that 4080.

In a rendering run of the same calculator, with the RTX 4070, the 5900X is 10.9% GPU-limited and the 5800X3D is 1.6% CPU-limited. The extra cores are the reason to buy a Ryzen 9. The gaming table is not.

Which AM4 CPU Matches Your GPU?

Match the chip to the card, at the resolution you play:

  • RTX 3060 or RTX 4060 at 1440p: A Ryzen 5 3600 is already GPU-limited, at 1.7% with the 3060 and 0.6% with the 4060. A 5600 leaves the 4060 8.1% GPU-limited. An X3D chip pushes that spare-CPU figure into the teens and does not change the 67 FPS estimate on the 4060.
  • RTX 4070 at 1440p: The 5600X is the 0% balance point. The 5600 is 1.7% CPU-limited. A Ryzen 7 3700X is 5.9% CPU-limited and still estimates 87 FPS. A Ryzen 7 2700X is 11.8% CPU-limited and estimates 75 FPS. That 75 is the result that justifies a new chip.
  • RTX 4080 at 1440p: The 5800X3D and 5900X are GPU-limited, at 2.3% and 0.6%. The 5600 is 6.3% CPU-limited. A 3600 is 11.8% CPU-limited and estimates 91 FPS instead of 99. A 2700X is 16.4% CPU-limited and estimates 75 FPS.
  • RTX 4090: At 1440p the 5800X3D is 2.5% CPU-limited and estimates 111 FPS. The 5600 is 10.5% CPU-limited and estimates 110. The 3600 estimates 91. The 2700X estimates 75, at 20.6%. At 4K the 2700X falls to 12.3% CPU-limited and 44 FPS, against 66 FPS for the 5800X3D. At 1080p the same 2700X is 28.4% CPU-limited and estimates 116 FPS, against 172 for the 5800X3D.

Ryzen 5 5600X vs Ryzen 7 5700X

For gaming they are the same pick: Gaming scores are 78 and 79. On an RTX 4070 at 1440p the 5600X is balanced at 0% and the 5700X is 0.6% GPU-limited. On an RTX 4080 at 1080p they are 6.4% and 5.8% CPU-limited. Both estimate the same frames on those cards.

The gap is the rendering score: 46 on the 5600X, 55 on the 5700X. The 5700X is also 8 cores against 6, and its TDP entry is 65W. Buy it when the PC compiles, exports, or streams as a second job. Buy the 5600X when the PC plays games.

5600X3D vs 5800X3D vs 5700X3D

Our gaming scores put the 5600X3D between the two 8-core chips: 91 for the 5600X3D, 93 for the 5800X3D, 85 for the 5700X3D. The 5600X3D is 6 cores. The other two are 8. With an RTX 4080 at 1440p the results are 1.2% GPU, 2.3% GPU, and 1.7% CPU. With an RTX 4090 at 1440p they are 3.4% CPU, 2.5% CPU, and 5.9% CPU, and all three estimate 111 FPS.

The 5800X3D is the one to keep if you already own it, and the one to buy if all three are on the shelf. The 5700X3D is the practical 8-core substitute. The 5600X3D scores like a flagship in this model and has two fewer cores for everything that is not a game.

Will My B450 or B550 Board Support It?

Check the board’s CPU support list, then update the BIOS before you pull the old chip: Most B450, X470, and 500-series boards run a Ryzen 5000 chip after that update, including the 5800X3D. Flash the BIOS while the current CPU is still installed. A socket match is not a support list. A320 boards are the ones to read line by line, because support there was never universal.

The percentages on this page assume dual-channel DDR4-3200. The same 5800X3D and RTX 4070 at 1440p estimates 87 FPS in dual channel and 84 FPS with one stick. Slow or single-channel memory is its own problem, covered in the RAM bottleneck guide.

AM4 vs Moving to AM5

Stay when the board and the DDR4 are already paid for: A drop-in Ryzen 5000 chip uses both. Move when you are buying a motherboard and memory anyway. AM4 does not take a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 CPU, so a new board is a different platform, and current gaming boards are DDR5. That choice is the gaming motherboard guide, not another AM4 SKU.

The calculator is the check either way. Select the chip you would drop in, and the chip you would buy with a new board, at the resolution you play. If both results name the graphics card and sit under 10%, the new platform is not buying frames from this GPU.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AM4 CPU in 2026?
